It's Monday, July 27, and three hours after flying out of hot, bustling New York, we land at hot, bustling Fort Lauderdale. The friendly chap on the Alamo car hire desk offers me an upgrade on the car booked in the UK. I agree to a Prestige Class car (two grades above what we booked) and a full tank of petrol for an extra $100 (Pounds 60).

I can't find our itinerary. I remember, however we're staying at a Westin hotel and it has the number 400 in its address. Out comes a map and we're pointed towards a hotel just a few miles north. Easy!

Our choice of car comes down to a huge seven-seater 4WD Chevrolet or a brutish Dodge Charger. I'm about to take the keys to the Chevvy but I'm over-ruled by my Top Gear fanatic companion and we're soon dropping our cases into the back of the big, blue 3.5-litre Dodge.
