The future of some of the West's most famous hotels was in doubt last night after the firm that owns them went into administration.

Landmark buildings such as Thornbury Castle, the Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath and Ston Easton Park in Somerset could be sold off after Von Essen Hotels - the holding company which runs 28 upmarket hotels and spas across the West - collapsed.
