Powerful organisations have big responsibilities to use that power responsibly. And while no one could dispute our big supermarkets have got that way by giving customers what they want, there are question marks over the way they treat their suppliers, particularly farmers.

So the news that a Groceries Code Adjudicator - an ombudsman for supermarkets by another name - is to be appointed is welcome, not least because it tips the balance of power between food producer and food retailer a little way back towards the most important partner in that arrangement - the farmer. This is yet another welcome sign that the coalition Government is prepared to show real support for British farmers and growers, and is not afraid to upset big business - in this case the British Retail Consortium - in order to do so.
